Winter Universiade comes to visit: online teaching in December
From 11th to 21st of December 2021, the 30th Winter Universiade will be hosted in Lucerne. The university and the PH will provide the venue for this multisport event in our Frohburgstrasse building for the entire month of December. Therefore, no courses, examinations or HSCL training sessions can be held in the Uni/PH building during this period. Students are invited to participate in the scientific congress or as volunteer helpers.
The programme of the Winter Universiade consists of ten winter sports competitions with international guests, as well as scientific exchange within the framework of the FISU World Conference on Innovation, Education and Sport at the University of Lucerne. Around 1600 athletes from over 540 universities in 50 nations are expected to take part. The competitions will take place in Central Switzerland and Graubünden.
Courses to be held digitally in December
The event was originally scheduled for January 2021, but had to be postponed due to the Covid 19 pandemic. The postponement means that, unlike the originally planned date, the use of the building will not fall during the lecture-free period. The majority of the courses in December will therefore be held digitally, as already communicated in the Semester Info of 25th May. Furthermore, no examinations can be held in the Uni/PH building during this period.
The Universiade and the Congress offer the university and the entire region an excellent opportunity to present themselves on the international stage. All six cantons of Central Switzerland and the City of Lucerne are represented in the Lucerne-Central Switzerland 2021 Winter Universiade Association, which together with the World Federation of University Sports FISU and Swiss University Sports, is tasked with the organisation of the event.
The University/PH building will house, among other things, the offices of the various delegations as well as central facilities such as the accreditation and media services. The scientific congress on 13th and 14th December will also take place in the Uni/PH building.
Participate in the congress or help out as a volunteer
Students and staff of the University are invited to participate in the event as participants in the scientific congress or as volunteers. The congress programme includes plenary sessions, parallel sessions, poster sessions and round tables. The main theme is 'Opportunities and Challenges of Sport in Modern Society', with a focus on the three sub-themes of 'Dual Careers', 'Digitalisation' and 'Women in Elite Sport'. The conference is being organised by the University of Lucerne, the Universities of Teacher Education of Lucerne, Zug and Schwyz, the Universities of Applied Sciences of Lucerne and Graubünden and the Swiss Federal Institute of Sports, Magglingen. The scientific director of the congress is Dr. Hannah Mormann, senior assistant at the Sociology Department of the University of Lucerne.
