He was a visiting scholar at the Department of Government, Essex University, UK; the Department of Sociology, Boston University; the Ralph Bunche Institute for International Studies, Graduate Center, CUNY; and the Department of Sociology, Columbia University.

Martin Petzke’s research investigates the ways in which social-scientific expertise, statistics, and numerical indicators shape, intervene in, and transform fields of specialized practice. He has studied the role of religious statistics in the emergence and perpetuation of global evangelical missions since the nineteenth century and how such quantitative perspectives have had an impact on other religions encountered in the mission field. He is currently in the process of publishing work from his recent project on how the measurement of immigrant integration in statistical “integration monitoring reports” is affecting the work of integration offices in Germany.
