Doctoral students are invited to participate in a workshop led by Jan G. Janmaat, Professor of Political Socialization at the University College London (UCL) organized by the Center for Religion, Economy and Politics (ZRWP) and the Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences (GSL).

The topic of the workshop with Jan Germen Janmaat will be related to his Public Lecture given on October 9th at 6.15 pm on “Regimes of Social Cohesion and Citizenship”. During the workshop we will delve deeper into the question about what is it that holds societies together?
This workshop not only gives the unique opportunity to get in contact with an internationally renowned scholar from a top global university, but also the chance to understand the phenomenon of cohesion in its interdisciplinary nature by bringing together students from different disciplines:
The topic of social cohesion has been discussed for some time in sociology as an effective means of tackling cultural and socio-economic problems of modernity. There are also various approaches, particularly in psychology, cultural geography, urban studies and ethnology. Furthermore, the concept of cohesion is also central to religious studies and theology when it comes for example to the social role of churches. The workshop could also be of particular relevance for political science, where the concept of social cohesion has been widely used, inviting to reflect on its foundation and its scientific basis.
During the workshop we will explore the concept of social cohesion, its mechanisms and their interrelationships. The interdisciplinary approach is an essential contribution to understand social cohesion as a complex concept and address these research gaps. The workshop will enable participants to extend and enhance their abilities to utilise theoretical frameworks and their explanatory mechanisms in a discussion process in which they will participate and receive valuable methodological insight from Prof. Janmaat.

Course content:
The course is primarily conceptualized to offer coaching for English Academic Writing to dotoral students of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Lucerne. Participants are expected to already have ample know-how of how to write academically in English, as no structured introduction to English Acacemic Writing will be given. Rather, participants receive individualized coaching regarding their own writing projects from the instructors and in small peer-to-peer support groups.

Im Arbeitsprozess verschwimmt häufig die Grenze zwischen Textproduktion also dem «einfach nur schreiben» und der Überarbeitung also dem «jeder Satz soll sitzen», zwischen Planung und Umsetzung oder zwischen Ideenskizze und Strukturieren. Das kann jede Phase des wissenschaftlichen Projekts betreffen. Viele Doktorierende trifft es jedoch gerade dann, wenn sie ihre Ideen oder Daten gesammelt haben und nun ‘nur’ noch schreiben müssten.
Der von der Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences der Universität Luzern (GSL) finanzierte Workshop «Planen – Steuern – Fertigstellen» mit Claudia Macho zeigt den Teilnehmenden in vier Themenschwerpunkten Strategien auf, wie ein wissenschaftliches Schreibprojekt systematisch gesteuert und verfolgt werden kann, um es erfolgreich abzuschliessen. Dazu werden die vier Themen vorgestellt, besprochen und anschliessend prototypisch umgesetzt: Fokus, Struktur, Kontinuität und Flow.
Kursstruktur und Inhalte:
Zwei Halbtage zu Strategien des Fertigstellens
Der Workshop findet online via Zoom an zwei Vormittagen statt (Zoom-Link wird vor den Kurstagen an die Teilnehmenden verschickt). Circa sechs Wochen danach gibt es eine 1.5 stündige Nachbereitung:
- Dienstag, 21. März von 08:30 bis 12:30 Uhr
- Mittwoch, 22. März von 08:30 bis 12:30 Uhr
- Nachbereitung/ Follow-up: Dienstag, 2. Mai von 8.30 bis 10.30 Uhr
Themenschwerpunkt 1: Fokus
Die Teilnehmenden lernen, ein inhaltliches Gesamtziel zu definieren und das Projektvorhaben in drei Ergebnisstufen zu denken. Das Ziel ist es, sein Vorhaben strategisch anzugehen und jeweils nur an den relevanten Aufgaben bzw. Zielsetzung einer Stufe zu arbeiten.
Themenschwerpunkt 2: Struktur
Die zentralen Aufgaben des Projektvorhabens erkennen können und in überschaubare,
machbare Anteile strukturieren, denen man sich Schritt für Schritt nähern kann.
Themenschwerpunkt 3: Kontinuität
Zeitressourcen für ein wissenschaftliches Schreibprojekt realistisch und vorausschauend einteilen, um kontinuierliches Vorankommen möglich zu machen – für kleine wie für grosse Zeitfenster.
Themenschwerpunkt 4: Flow
Die Teilnehmenden erfahren, wie sie die optimalen Rahmenbedingungen für ihren Schreib-Flow herstellen und ggf. die Leichtigkeit in ihr wissenschaftliches Schreibprojekt zurückholen.

Dr. Andreas Tunger-Zanetti bietet seit über fünf Jahren Kurse in wiss. Schreiben über die Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences an. Auch für das Herbst-Semester 2022 können sich GSL Mitglieder für einen Schreibkurs mit 3 Blocktagen sowie einer geplanten Retraite im Dezember bis spätestens 5. September anmelden.
Der Kurs und die Retraite ist für Doktorierende aller Stufen interessant, da die Kurstage mit unterschiedlichen Themen einzeln gebucht werden können und somit die Bedürfnisse sowohl von Schreibneulingen wie auch wiederkehrenden Kursbesucher:innen bedient werden.

The workshop with Prof. Michael Brady (University of Glasgow) titled "The Philosophy of Post-Traumatic Growth" and his related guest talk "A Philosophical Approach to Improving Theorising about Post-traumatic Growth" are co-organized by the Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences and the Department for Health Sciences and Medicine at the University of Lucerne.
This workshop targeted at (post-)doctoral students from disciplines such as philosophy, psychology, health sciences, medicine will discuss a number of central philosophical issues and problems generated by research into post-traumatic growth. These include (i) how we should understand the growth in PTG; (ii) how we should understand the relation between adversity/suffering and growth; and (iii) how we can address ethical concerns around PTG.
