Smoking breaks and ventilation breaks
Main entrance
Whilst looking into this subject more closely, the SOL found that there was no majority support for the implementation of more drastic measures (such as moving the smoking area away from the entrance, removing the ashtrays) neither from the 'Studrat' nor from the working group. Added to this was the general consensus that such interventions usually turn out negatively: smokers may continue to smoke near the entrance and cigarettes ends are simply thrown on the floor. For this reason, the SOL has decided to tackle the problem with an information campaign at the beginning of the semester.
Entrance on 2nd floor
As regards the entrance on the 2nd floor, the problem is a different one: staff working in the offices near the 2nd floor entrance cannot escape the smoke, but at the same time their offices need to be aired. For this reason a compromise was needed. The hour will thus be split into a 'smoker’s half hour' from xx:45 to xx:15 and into an 'airing half hour' from xx:15 to xx:45. This compromise means that both affected groups need to change their behaviour but also allows for a workable solution. We therefore ask smokers and staff in the offices near the 2nd floor entrance to show mutual respect for each other.
