Workshop ‘Researching Marginalized Groups in Switzerland’

In this one-day workshop, we will bring together researchers from different disciplines who conduct qualitative research (with and) on marginalized groups (e.g. based on gender identity, sexual orientation, sex characteristics, age, disability, eurodiversity, race, origin, language, or religion) in Switzerland. The aim is to informally exchange, share, reflect, and learn from each other about the joys and challenges we have encountered in the specific use of our methods and methodologies. Therefore, we will organise this workshop as a creative research lab, not in a classical format with presentations.

Institute of Social and Cultural Anthropology, University of Lucerne
Organisers: Carole Ammann (she/her) & Leo Theissing (they/them)

Specifically, we are interested in the following questions:
• How can we access hard-to-reach groups?
• What kind of (creative and/or participatory) methods, based upon critical methodologies (such as feminist, queer, disability studies, critical race, or postcolonial theory) do we use to research marginalized groups in Switzerland? How do we assess their opportunities and challenges?
• How do we adapt our methodological approach to the specific group(s) we are studying, and what compromises do we make in the process?
• What ethical challenges do we face and how do we deal with them?
• What do we give back? How do we compensate the individual research participants and/or the marginalized groups who contribute to our research?
• How do our positionalities (e.g. being an outsider/insider) influence our research and our methods? Early career and/or scholars from marginalized groups are particularly welcome to apply.

Please send your (creative) abstract to Carole and Leo (carole.ammann@unilu.ch; leo.theissing@unilu.ch) by 29 November 2024.
