Sustainability and your studies
You can make sustainability a part of your daily student life—whether it’s through your studies, eating habits, shopping choices, or leisure activities. Here are some tips and resources to help you along the way.
Make your studies more sustainable by attending courses related to sustainability, getting involved in student sustainability clubs on the Lucerne campus and/or taking advantage of support programs that will help you advance in sustainable development topics.
- No matter what you are studying - you will find courses with a focus on sustainable development in most degree programs. Under "Advanced search" in the course catalogue, you can filter by the keyword "Sustainability".
- The student association sustainability Lucerne (VENALU) is the right address if you want to campaign for more sustainability on the Lucerne campus.
- Students at the University of Lucerne have access to a number of funding platforms and funding programs in the area of sustainability. You can find out more under Support programs.
After attending courses related to sustainability, you're hungry. Good that there is also a selection of sustainable options.
- Eat in our in-house canteen - the menu is predominantly vegetarian/vegan. The climate impact of each menu is indicated to help you make a climate-friendly choice.
- If you want to eat vegetarian/vegan outside of the university building, you can take a look at HappyCow. The website lists vegan, vegetarian and vegetarian-friendly restaurants - in Lucerne, but also worldwide.
- Fight food waste by picking up a delicious yesterday's something at the bakery Äss-Bar, saving all kinds of food and dishes (at a reduced price) from being thrown away via the Too good to go app or supporting Food Save Lucerne in its efforts.
Whether you're shopping for groceries, clothes or furnishing your home - you'll find sustainable options in and around Lucerne.
- Stroll through Lucerne's weekly market and stock up on local, seasonal food. The market takes place every Tuesday and Saturday from 7:00 to 12:00 on both sides of the Reuss at Rathausquai and Unter der Egg, as well as on Jesuitenplatz and Bahnhofstrasse. There is also a small weekly market in Helvetiagärtli on Saturday mornings.
- You can shop unpackaged in the two Wärchbrogg stores (on Alpenquai and Baselsrasse).
- Looking for a new pair of old trousers? In one of Lucerne's many second-hand stores, you're sure to find a new favorite piece (or sell one). Here are a few recommended addresses: The Secondhand, MARTA, La mienne, Fizzen, Üsé, neo vintage, Tootsies, Ziitlos Secondhand & retro, Ali Baba Vintage Second Hand.
- Furnish your apartment with furniture from the Luzerner Brockenhaus, Carits Wohnen Luzern or Heilsarmee Brocki in Kriens. In addition to furniture, you can find all sorts of other things there - kitchen utensils, pictures, clothes, etc.
- If you prefer to browse online, then scroll through Ricardo - an online marketplace for private and commercial buyers and sellers.
- At Revendo you can sell your used smartphone, laptop or PC and/or buy a used and checked device.
