Mark Villiger (Prof. Dr. iur., University of Zürich/Switzerland) was a former Judge (2006-2015) and Section President (2012-2015) at the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg. Currently, he is the advisor of the President of that Court in respect of the “Network of highest domestic European courts”. He is furthermore professeur titulaire at the University of Zurich (international law and European law). He was a scientific counsellor at the Max-Planck-Institute for comparative and international law (Heidelberg) and a member of the Nomination Committee of the Thomson Reuters Trustees (New York/London). He has spoken on human rights, international and public law in 24 European countries. He has published various books and articles, including (in German) a Handbook on the European Convention on Human Rights (2nd ed.), and (in English) a study on Customary International Law and Treaties (2nd ed.) as well as a Commentary on the 1969 Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties. His hobbies are long distance swimming, Romanesque and gothic cathedrals, and current affairs.
