Publication funding
This page lists the most important publication funding instruments. In addition to the traditional funding options via the Swiss National Science Foundation and the Read&Publish Agreements, the Open Access Publication Fund will be available to members of the University of Lucerne from January 2025.
Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF)
The Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) supports the open access publication of articles, book chapters and books. The SNSF finances the publication of journal articles and book chapters that have been produced as part of an SNSF project. In addition, the SNSF finances scientific book publications, provided they are published via a Gold Open Access publisher - regardless of whether the publication was the result of an SNSF project or not.
The SNSF finances journal articles and book chapters as long as they have been produced as part of an SNSF-funded project and are published in a purely open access journal (Gold Open Access) or a peer-reviewed edited volume. The amount can also be applied for after the end of the project.

The SNSF funds comprehensive, scientific and peer-reviewed works as long as they are published via a Gold Open Access publisher – regardless of whether they were produced as part of an SNSF project or not. This also includes anthologies, legal commentaries and editions. Textbooks, special editions of journals, conference proceedings, new editions and translations are not funded. Parallel to the digital Open Access publication, a printed version of the work can be published and sold. The costs for printing and distribution of the printed copy must be financed by the sales proceeds.

The SNSF finances dissertations and postdoctoral theses as long as they are published via a Gold Open Access publisher – regardless of whether they were produced as part of an SNSF project or not. Parallel to the digital Open Access publication, a printed version of the work can be published and sold. The costs for printing and distribution of the printed copy must be financed by the sales proceeds. In the case of qualification theses, the reviews are considered peer reviews.

Financing through a Read&Publish Agreement
Through Read&Publish Agreements, which the Swiss universities have concluded with various major academic publishers, members of Lucerne's higher education institutions can publish Open Access in thousands of journals at no additional cost. Further information on the individual agreements and the journals included can be found on the website of the Central and University Library of Lucerne.
Open Access Publication Fund
In order to implement its Open Science Policy, the University of Lucerne supports its members in financing Open Access publications. Costs for Gold Open Access publications (articles, book chapters and books) that cannot be financed by other funding instruments are covered. The Open Access Publication Fund is administered by the Open Science Department of the Central and University Library of Lucerne.
Further information can be found in the information sheet Open Access Publication Fund and in the FAQ below.
Submission of applications via the Research Information System (FIS) will only be available from the beginning of February. Until then, applications for publication support can be submitted by e-mail (including all enclosures mentioned in the information sheet) to openaccess. @ zhbluzern.ch
