Open Access
Open Access at the University of Lucerne
Open Access makes publications publicly accessible and thus increases their visibility. Not only members of universities worldwide, but also people from politics, business and society can use scientific findings thanks to open access.
There are various ways to make a scientific work accessible free of charge: A publication can be published directly and immediately open access under an open license via a publisher ("golden road"). If this is not possible, conventionally published works can be published at the same time or after a specific period of time via the LORY repository ("green road"). Finally, articles in a hybrid journal can be published open access, provided the journal is part of a read&publish agreement.
For more information on open access, please visit the ZHB Luzern website.

There are various ways to fund your open access publication:
- Swiss National Science Foundation: Costs for Gold Open Access publications (articles and monographs) that have been produced as part of an SNSF-funded project, or for monographs even without a connection to an SNSF project; all funded publications must undergo peer review (in the case of dissertations, the expert opinions count as peer review).
- Read&Publish Agreement: costs for an open access publication in thousands of journals published by Elsevier, Springer, Wiley, Taylor&Francis, Cambridge and Sage.
- FoKo or Faculty: FoKo financially contributes to open access publications up to a maximum of CHF 5000 per publication, provided it meets certain requirements. It covers a maximum of half of the costs (further information). Smaller amounts can also be paid via the faculty. The contact persons are the faculty managers.
As a member of the University of Lucerne, you have the opportunity to publish open access in thousands of journals of the publishers Elsevier, Springer, Sage, Cambridge, Oxford, Taylor&Francis, Wiley as well as in six of the twelve journals of the open access publisher PLOS without additional costs within the framework of existing "read&publish agreements".
Further information
LORY (Lucerne Open Repository), the institutional repository of the University of Lucerne, is particularly suitable for secondary publications, but also for the (first) publication of dissertations, working papers and other documents. For this purpose, the publications must be recorded in the university's research information system (FIS) and full texts must be uploaded and released for LORY. The Open Access team of the ZHB takes care of any copyright questions with the publisher, sets an embargo if necessary and - if legally possible - releases the publication for LORY. Separate guidelines apply to the publication of dissertations.
LORY is also suitable for the publication of research data - provided that these be made openly accessible.

Journal articles can be published directly on LORY. The ZHB also offers the possibility to professionally organize and publish open access journals with the publication platform Open Journal System (OJS).
