Adrian Loretan (* 1959  in Brig/VS)  completed studies in philosophy and catholic and evangelical theology at University of Lucerne and University of Tübingen (1984 lic.theol.) and studies in rights at the University of Friborg and the University of Gregoriana in Rome (1993 Dr. iur. Can.). As of 1996, Adrian Loretan is a full professor of canon law and state-church law at the University of Lucerne. His research is in the field of human rights, exploring questions and on the circumstances of how different religions can peacefully live together peacefully in a modern state. In 1999–2001, he served as Dean of the Lucerne Faculty of Theology. Adrian Loretan is the editor of the series "ReligionsRecht in Dialog (Law and Religion)" and "Religionsrechtliche Studien" (vol. 1-3) and has published several monographs and edited volumes, including Freedom of Religion in the Context of Human Rights (monograph) and Freedom of Religion in the Context of Fundamental Rights (ed.). As of 2000, he co-runs joint seminars with the law and theological faculties of the University of Basel (Engelberg seminars).
