Enhance your academic writing skills by enrolling in our English Academic Writing Course, led by Dr (Des) Fatima Mukaddam, an experienced English educator. This course is meticulously designed to equip participants with the essential writing skills required for academic and professional success. Participants will engage with a curriculum covering critical aspects of academic writing, including thesis development, organisation, clarity, citation conventions, and language proficiency. Most importantly, personalised one-on-one coaching sessions will provide tailored feedback to address individual needs and writing goals, thereby refining participants’ writing skills within a supportive environment. A distinctive feature of this course is the integration of innovative AI-powered writing assistance tools, designed to streamline the writing process, improve grammar and style, and enhance overall clarity and coherence. The course will start with an intense 1-day workshop introducing crucial aspects of English academic writing. It will take on-site at a date selected by GSL members interested in participating via this doodle (please fill in the doodle till July 11th the latest). An online session about AI-powered tools will be offered on another day at lunch time – please help select a date by filling in this doodle also till July 11th.
About the Instructor
Fatima Mukaddam brings extensive experience in teaching English Language and Literature and tutoring non-native English learners. She has successfully edited numerous papers, essays, and book chapters, refining her skills in guiding students through the writing process. Her passion for teaching and dedication to student success ensure a valuable and enriching course experience. Last but not least, as a GSL alumna, she knows exactly what the requirements for dissertations are at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences.

When? Wednesday 27th of November to Saturday 30th of November
Where? Villa Kapellmatt in Vitznau
Who? Doctoral Students of the GSL
Costs? A maximum participant fee of CHF 190 – most likely, remaining funds will pay for more than budgeted at the point of planning (June 2024). Also, GSL members with remaining mobility funding in 2024 can apply for their remaining funding to pay towards the participant fee.

During the Fall Semester 2024 Andreas Tunger is offering to organize Writing Meet-Ups for doctoral candidates at the University of Lucerne. These Meet-Ups can be used as designated time to work on your dissertation or related projects in small groups that can offer support and advice both technical and emotional. They can also help increase your motivation and assist you keeping up with your own milestones. During the Meet-Ups the participants meet up at an agreed upon time and place. At the beginning of each session participants share their goal of the day, then everyone works for a set time, with set breaks in between. At the end of a session participants can share their experience and can ask and offer advice to each other.
The concept can be realized in different versions, either weekly with a time frame of 2 to 4 hours or monthly or bi-monthly with each session being 1 to 2 days of designated time working together.
