Aram Mattioli was born on January 21, 1961 in Zurich. He studied history and philosophy and finished his promotion at the University of Basel in 1993. During 1988/89 he worked at the ETH Zurich Archives of Contemporary History and from 1989 to 1997 as a scientific assistant. In the first years of his academic career he worked in the fields of Intellectual History and the History of Antisemitism in Switzerland, Italy and southern Germany. In 1996/97 he then completed a residence for research at the Ruprecht-Karls-University of Heidelberg. After his habilitation, Aram Mattioli was appointed in 1999 full professor for Contemporary History at the young University of Lucerne. For about ten years he was engaged in the international research field of Fascist Italy. During 2001/02 he was dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences and from 2001 to 2004, 2006 to 2008, 2010 to 2012 and 2014 to 2016 head of the Institute of History. Actually he is working about the Native American Self-determination movement in the USA.
