CV
Michael Havranek is the research director of the Competence Center for Health Data Science. He graduated from the University of Zurich with a master’s degree in Medicine, a master’s degree in mathematics and natural sciences from the Faculty of Science (mathematisch-naturwissenschaftliche Fakultät), and a bachelor’s degree in Psychology. Afterwards, he earned an MD (Dr. med.) and a PhD (Dr. sc. nat.) from the University of Zurich and the University Hospital Zurich (MD-PhD program). In the process, he visited the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich (Germany) and the University of Geneva.
His research focuses on various topics including healthcare quality and costs and healthcare process and system improvements. Within these topics, he is particularly interested in using techniques from data science and machine learning on both routinely collected healthcare data (e.g., electronic medical records) and newer only recently available data sources (such as Wearables data). With his applied and methodological research, he strives to develop improvements and innovations in the healthcare system.
Research
Michael Havranek’s primary research expertise lies in the field of healthcare quality and costs with a particular focus on hospital comparisons. However, his overarching goal is to use techniques from data science and machine learning to improve healthcare processes and systems. Furthermore, he is particularly interested in using various combined data sources arising from the digitalization in healthcare.
In summary, his main interests are:
- Hospital quality and costs, comparisons, and indicators
- Healthcare process and system improvements
- Data science, machine learning and statistical modelling
