CV
Gisela Michel holds a PhD in psychology with a focus on clinical and health psychology (University of Fribourg, Switzerland). In 2003, she spent one year as a visiting scholar at the New York University, USA. After her PhD she has been working in the Swiss Childhood Cancer Registry concentrating on epidemiological research in the field of survivorship, psychosocial late effects and follow-up care. From 2007 to 2009, she spent two years as a post-doctoral research fellow at the University of Sheffield, UK. Between 2009 and 2013, she held an Ambizione Grant of the Swiss National Science Foundation and worked at the Institute of Social and Preventive Medicine at the University of Bern, Switzerland.
Research
My research interests focus on psychosocial outcomes and health service research in patients with chronic diseases. A major topic of my research is childhood cancer (late effects after childhood cancer, transition from pediatric to adult medical care and long-term follow-up for survivors of childhood cancer, parents of long-term childhood cancer survivors).

Academic performance of children with Sickle Cell Disease in Benin
Children and adolescents with sickle cell disease (SCD) frequently suffer from lower academicperformance than their peers. However, adequate treatment and regular care might preventdeterioration of academic performance. This project aims to evaluate the academicperformance of children and teenagers aged 6 years to 18 years having been diagnosed withSCD. For this purpose, the study will take a prospective exploratory approach. Participantseligible for this study include children and teenagers with a sickle cell diagnosis (aged 6-18).Participants will be enrolled by the treating physicians after obtaining informed consent fromtheir parents/legal guardian during routine consultations. Neurological evaluations will beconducted by the treating physicians. Data on academic progress will be collected with the aidof a questionnaire and compared to the national standard reference which details the expectedacademic grade levels and progress for children and adolescents. The results from theneurologic tests and the reported academic levels will be used to evaluate thechild/adolescent’s academic development. 2022– -
